When we think pizza, the image pops up immediately. The thick/thin crust, regular/large sized, crunchy/crispy, the various toppings, flakes and cheese and what not!

All these add to the beautiful and divine taste of a pizza.

But have we ever thought about what gives the base taste to the pizza? Do we ever realize that without the cheese and toppings, there is an inherent taste that gives the overall punch to our mouth when we have that heavenly slice?

It never occurs to us, the pizza dough is nothing and has no taste by itself. But then we spread the base sauce over it and voila! the taste and smell immediately start reminding us what the dish is and our stomach gets ready immediately!

That my dear readers, is the Pizza Sauce made from Fresh Tomatoes!

Ways to make easy homemade pizza sauce

1) Pizza Sauce from Diced Tomatoes

Yep! That’s the main ingredient – the tomatoes! In this recipe, we make our pizza sauce using fresh and ripe tomatoes along with all the typical ingredients like basil and oregano that go into making the Pizza Sauce.

2) Pizza Sauce from Tomato Sauce – Why its a mistake!

There is another option, but making pizza sauce from Tomato Sauce is a BIG NO!

Many make this mistake, but you should be making it from Tomato Puree and not Tomato Sauce!

The sauce and puree are entirely different.

The reason we need a puree is, the tomato sauce already is seasoned and has ingredients and preservatives (if any) in it and was intended to be a side dish and not as a base. The thickness and consistency of the sauce is not the one that we need for a pizza sauce. There is no control over what ingredients went into the preparation of that sauce!

But the puree is just canned and not seasoned!

Read more on the difference between Tomato Sauce and Tomato Puree here.

While many recipes do suggest the tomato sauce as a viable option, it is not for us. We should know the ingredients that go into the making of the pizza sauce

Our suggested way is to prepare the sauce ourselves at our home! This gives us the satisfaction that we made the pizza sauce recipe from scratch 🙂

Ingredients

  • 6 pieces Tomatoes Fresh, Large and Ripe
  • 4 pieces Garlic sliced
  • 1 piece Onion chopped
  • 4 tbsp Oil to fry
  • 1 tsp Oregano Powder
  • 1 tsp Basil Powder
  • 1 tbsp Red Chilli Flakes
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 tbsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Sugar

Instructions

  1. Add water into a boiling pan, allow the water to boil and add all the ripe tomatoes into it. Close the lid and allow the tomatoes to boil for 5 minutes so that they are cooked and become soft.

  2. After 5 minutes, remove the tomatoes from the pan and allow them to cool completely.

  3. Once cooled down, peel the tomatoes and remove the center thick portion of the tomatoes as shown. We don't need this because we are making a smooth tomato sauce.

Cut the tomato into small pieces.

  4. Add oil to a frying pan and heat. Once hot, add sliced garlic and fry for 2 to 3 minutes until you get the garlic aroma.

  5. Now add the chopped onions, mix well and fry until the raw smell of onion leaves.

  6. Add the tiny cut tomato pieces to the pan now and mix well.

  7. Add salt, oregano, basil, chilli flakes, red chilli powder, sugar and ketchup to the pan with tomatoes and mix well.

  8. Close the lid of the pan and cook for 15 to 20 minutes in medium flame and keep stirring and mixing at regular intervals.

  9. You will know it is done once the oil starts to come aside separately. This means it is devoid of all moisture and the dish is nicely done. Switch off the flame and allow it to cool.

  10. After the sauce is cooled down, add it to a mixer grinder and grind well to make it a paste. If you like the sauce to be a bit coarse, skip this step.

Questions that popped up in mind

  • Can I use tomato sauce for pizza?

As we have said above, it is best to make own tomato sauce. But if you need to buy one, make sure to buy a pure tomato puree with no salt, spices or herbs added. Do not buy a sauce. You can then add the required ingredients separately, just in time before making our pizza or store appropriately.

  • Can you use tomato puree for pizza base?

Just tomato puree won’t be good enough. It would be bland and also a little bit bitter, it just doesn’t taste as good as it is with the spices and herbs!

  • Should the sauce be coarse or smooth?

It is up to us. We can make it however we wish, its a preference really, if you want the base to take a back seat in the pizza, make it very smooth. But if you love the pizza base sauce taste, make it a bit coarse so that you feel that in your mouth!

We love it smooth 🙂

  • Can this be used as a base for some other dish?

Try this as the base for Pasta and let us know 🙂
